Houstonians Rappel 26 Stories for United Way

It takes real bravery to safely propel off the side of a 26-story building. And on Friday, November 14, that’s exactly what dozens of fearless Houstonians will be doing as they step off the edge of the Galleria DoubleTree Hotel for Rappel for a Reason, a fundraising event benefiting the United Way of Greater Houston.

This is no ordinary fundraiser. With more than 6,000 feet of rope stretched across the hotel’s glass façade, participants will rappel 26 stories down, not just testing their courage, but helping local families find the strength to rebuild and thrive.

The mission behind it is powerful. Across Greater Houston, 14% of households are living below the federal poverty line, and another 28% are working hard but still can’t afford life’s basic necessities. United Way is there to help bridge that gap, providing programs that support financial stability, youth development, health care, and essential needs.

Each participant raises at least $1,500, plus a $50 registration fee that goes directly toward those life-changing programs. The day is filled with energy, music, food, and community support. All this is done to celebrate the people who are literally going over the edge to make a difference.

Houston City Beat and our crew will be there, cheering on our friends at Frost Bank as they take the leap for this incredible cause. We might not be rappelling ourselves (trust me, as someone who’s 100% terrified of heights, I’m fine keeping both feet on the ground), but we’ll be there in full support of these brave Houstonians who are doing something extraordinary for their neighbors.

It takes courage to step off a ledge 26 stories high. It takes heart to do it for others. And that’s exactly what this event is all about — Houston coming together, lifting each other up, and proving that when one of us rises (or rappels), we all do.

Stay tuned for the updated story.
