Estate Planning Starts With a Conversation: Texas Law Solutions on HCB Live

Fosca Piomelli Barrios and Danelle Gulley

It is a conversation that is easy to move to another day. Between work, family responsibilities and everything else on the calendar, planning for the unexpected can feel like something that can wait.

But one question brings the subject closer to home: If something happened to you, would the people you love know what to do?

On October 19, 2026, Fosca Piomelli-Barrios, Founding Partner, and Danelle Gulley, Partner, of Texas Law Solutions joined What’s Happening With HOU for an HCB Live conversation kicking off National Estate Planning Awareness Week. The invitation to Houston families is simple: make room to talk about the future and make your wishes known.

A place on the family agenda

National Estate Planning Awareness Week runs October 19–25, 2026, according to the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils. It offers a timely reason to bring a difficult subject into an ordinary family conversation.

The words “estate planning” may sound formal. The questions behind them are personal. Who understands what matters to you? What have you talked about, and what have you simply assumed your loved ones already know?

A busy household can have a plan for dinner, school pickup and the next vacation while leaving those bigger questions unspoken. Putting the conversation on the calendar is a way to give it the attention it deserves.

Begin with the people, not a perfect speech

Starting does not mean having every answer ready. It can mean setting aside time to listen, naming the questions that feel uncomfortable and agreeing that the subject is worth returning to.

For a first conversation, consider a few open-ended prompts:

These are conversation starters, not a substitute for a legal plan. An estate-planning attorney can help you understand the options and requirements that apply to your circumstances.

Let this episode be the opening

Sometimes it is easier to begin with something you watched together than to introduce a serious topic out of the blue. Send the episode to someone you love, make time to watch it and use it as an invitation to talk.

The next step does not have to be dramatic. It might be choosing a day for that discussion or writing down the questions you want to bring to it. What matters is moving the subject from “someday” to an actual conversation.
