Houston, TX - Right along Milam Street in Midtown, the Houston Fire Museum has officially reopened its doors, and the team there can't wait to welcome you back! This isn't just any museum; it's a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark housed in the iconic 'Old 7’s,' a fire station built in 1899.
After an impressive $5.7 million building preservation project, this beloved station has undergone a stunning transformation over the past four years. Visitors can now witness the meticulous restoration of its original beauty, including the removal of old stucco to expose the historic brick facade. The original windows have been lovingly restored, and modern conveniences such as central air-conditioning and improved accessibility have been seamlessly integrated.
Among the museum's many treasures is a piece of the World Trade Center, generously donated by a benefactor. This artifact serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice that firefighters embody.

One of the key figures at the museum is Tom McDonald, a former Houston firefighter who served from 1981 to 2008. As the Board President for the Houston Fire Museum, Tom brings a wealth of knowledge, commitment, and passion to his role. His fascination with firefighting began as a child, inspired by the show "Emergency." At just 13 years old, his mother took him to visit a fire station in 1974, and from that day forward, he was hooked.
Tom's dedication to documenting the Houston Fire Department's efforts is evident through the dramatic photos he captured while battling fires. His impressive work can be found in the special collections of the University of Houston Libraries. Today, as a steward of the museum, he focuses on educating the public about fire safety and preserving the rich history of firefighting in Houston.
Visitors to the museum can explore exhibits that showcase exquisite masonry, intricate woodwork, and beautifully restored windows, all while diving into the fascinating early days of the Houston Fire Department. This 125-year-old building once served as the home for some of the city’s earliest brave firefighters, who protected Houston with equipment that would be considered primitive today.
The museum also features special areas designed just for kids, making it a perfect family outing. Best of all, tickets are free through 2024! For more information, visit houstonfiremuseum.org. Come and experience the rich history and vibrant stories waiting for you at the Houston Fire Museum!
