Cat Spring Hall in Cat Spring, Texas was filled with anticipation as the 19th Annual Avey's Chili Cookoff descended upon Austin County. The aroma of simmering chili filled the air, mingling with the laughter and chatter of the crowd. Sixty-four teams, each with their own secret recipe, vied for the coveted title of champion.

This year, the event proceeds benefited Brian Krause, a beloved member of the community battling cancer. People came from as far away as Galveston to support this worthy cause.
As a judge, I had the privilege of sampling a wide array of family recipes. The judges started out with margaritas, beans, cornbread, and finally the chili.
While not every entry was a winner, each contestant brought their passion and creativity to the table. The competition was fierce, but the camaraderie was even stronger. As the day drew to a close, the winners were announced, and the auction, expertly conducted by Switzer Land & Auction Services, raised substantial funds for Brian Krause.
Avey's Chili Cookoff is more than just a culinary competition; it's a testament to the power of community. It's a reminder that when we come together, we can make a real difference in the lives of others. As the sun set on another successful event, we couldn't help but look forward to the next year, when we would gather once again to celebrate good food, good friends, and a good cause.
