Sweet Scoop: December: Houston’s Heartwarming Holiday Moments

December in Houston hits different. The weather can’t decide what it’s doing, but the city absolutely can: it’s showing up with light displays, community giving, and stories that make you feel a little more hopeful about the world.

This month’s Sweet Scoop is all about the joy, generosity, and local magic lighting up H-Town as we wrap up the year.

Holiday Lights & City Traditions

Mayor’s Tree Lighting at City Hall

Downtown turned into a holiday postcard as the Mayor’s Tree Lighting brought families, food, music, and fireworks to the heart of the city. With Brian McKnight headlining the main stage and fireworks erupting from the roof of City Hall, it was a “this is our city” kind of moment that officially flipped Houston into holiday mode. Light Up the Park Houston

Light Up the Park Houston is the Astros’ newest holiday tradition, presented by Houston Methodist — and Houston City Beat got a special sneak peek before the gates opened to the public. This 45-day festival transforms Daikin Park into an indoor winter wonderland filled with creativity, teamwork, and pure Houston spirit, running now through January 4, 2026.

BEARing Gifts: Hope for Kids in CPS Care

While many of us are wrapping gifts at home, BEAR…BE A Resource and its volunteers are wrapping something even bigger: hope.

Between towering stacks of toys and busy sorting lines, Executive Director Tammy Hetmaniak and Board Member Kelly Simon helped lead a holiday effort that makes sure children in at-risk and CPS situations aren’t forgotten this season. From stuffed animals to bikes, each gift is a quiet reminder that Houston cares.
