The story of La Donna Foto—which translates to “The Lady Photographer” in Italian—didn’t begin in a gallery, but in the halls of the University of Houston. After wrapping up a second year of Italian language studies, the artist found themselves at a unique crossroads: they finally possessed the linguistic tools to match a decade-long passion for Italian culture and travel.

Howard Sherman doesn’t do subtle. Since graduating from the University of North Texas in 2006, the Texas artist has made a name with huge, high-voltage canvases bursting with bold color, aggressive brushwork, and playful surprises. As Houston began removing “love locks” from its bridges to protect the structures, photographer Chris Pinon set out to preserve what was being lost.
