The story of La Donna Foto—which translates to “The Lady Photographer” in Italian—didn’t begin in a gallery, but in the halls of the University of Houston. After wrapping up a second year of Italian language studies, the artist found themselves at a unique crossroads: they finally possessed the linguistic tools to match a decade-long passion for Italian culture and travel.
Howard Sherman doesn’t do subtle. Since graduating from the University of North Texas in 2006, the Texas artist has made a name with huge, high-voltage canvases bursting with bold color, aggressive brushwork, and playful surprises. Look closer and you might spot unexpected details, even a cartoon character, tucked into the chaos.
